Why Tapped is Bottled in Glass

We’ve never been a fan of putting consumable hot liquids, such as maple syrup, in plastic. It seemed obvious that chemicals would leach from the plastic into the liquid. We also think that plastic influences the flavor and stability of maple syrup. That’s why we pack all of our syrup in glass bottles. It turns out there are even more important reasons to do so.

Plastics are everywhere in our world - really everywhere, from Antarctica to the North Pole, in the oceans and in our brains, in wildlife and in our children when they are born. We’re seeing increasing levels of micro- and nanoplastics in our bodies. A recent study showed that 0.5% of our brains’ weight is now plastic. And, unfortunately, these plastics can pass from a mother to child during pregnancy. As a guest on The Great Simplification stated, our children are now “born pre-polluted”.

We all need to play a role in reducing plastics to improve our own health and reduce plastic pollution. We also likely will need national and global policies to effectively limit plastic contamination in our bodies and environment. You can do your part by choosing products not made with (or wrapped in) plastic. We will continue to bottle our maple syrup in glass bottles. The only plastic we consistently use in our products is the tamper-evident neck bands. We’re looking for ways to eliminate that by switching to a paper-based seal.
